This and that

First up, GUD Magazine is teasing people with the cover art I did for them. It's been a very long time since I'd done a cover for anyone, and I had a blast doing this one. There were no guarantees they'd buy what I did, but the premise of the cover was just too cool to pass up trying, and then they loved it. They're good folks. Go check them out!

I've just finished chapter 4 on my novel. I'd gotten a bit bogged down in research on drug culture, since I want my character to have just exactly the right kind of OD experience, but I've sorted that out now. (If anyone knows how much any street drugs cost in Kansas City circa 1985, please speak up!)

With chapter 4 done, I'm pausing the novel long enough to dig through my obscene backlog of unpolished fiction. It's damn well time to get stuff out there. I've got six nine stories that I could be circulating that I'm not because I haven't revised them.

Once that's done I'm strongly considering a piece for Haunted Legends. To which I'd also just like to say a huge thanks to both [info]ellen_datlow and [info]nihilistic_kid for having an open submission period.

Nine??

You're making me feel like a slug.

It's much easier to crank out stories when you're a lazy bastard that doesn't revise or submit. No, that's not entirely fair to me, I do revise and submit some stuff, but I'm terrible at the meat & potatoes of the biz -- polishing stuff I wrote because it was in my head and sending it unsolicited to everyone who says they pay for words. I only revise and submit when I write for a market or when I've talked to an editor and they're interested in the thing I talked about.

Technically, there are two others besides those nine that need a bit of revision and sending out, but nine is the number of stories that have never been submitted.

Wait a minute... You do not get to be a slug in comparison when you're getting stuff like that ... um, last thing you... er, mentioned in the private forum place thing.

So there.

I'd rather have nine (or ten)! Then there's still hope! =D

I found a great market for one of my stories and their submission window closes at midnight tonight! So must compose a quick cover letter and email that out this very evening. Then I will have three stories in circulation. But I could have five if I would just quit being a weiner about revisions. Yeesh.

Go go go! You can do it!

I did it! Ideomancer looks like a good match, and I'm really pleased with the story. Talk about your 11th hour submission, though. It was 11:10pm when I sent the email.

I'll make them available to the group as I get through edits. :)

Nine is pretty incredible. I hope you revise them and get them out in front of editors soon. I totally get how hard it is to get something in shape to send out. (Relatively, I'm a slug. I only have three which I need to revise.)

I'm trying to be circumspect and just accept that revision is a learned skill that I need to learn. I need to get over my petulant if I can't get it right on the first try, what's the point reaction to the process. It's not a thing that I give any brain cycles to at the upper level, but that current is definitely running through the lower parts and I think it's what's getting in the way of due diligence on revision.

Such teases. I want to see the rest.

And I will hunt you down like a dog if you do not revise Six Metal Prayers ASAP.

But you need to wait on some of the others because I still want to read them. Now I'm going to go shuffle through the papers on my desk and find your steampunk story...

I made it half way through revision on Six Metal Prayers last night, I'm gonna try and finish it today.

The steampunk story is among my most broken. I'm sure it'll be fun to read!

Ooh! Congrats on the cover. And good luck revising that backlog.

And may I just say woot! on chapter four? I wish I had a novel to work on. I can't believe I wrote an outline for a really very good one, and then fell out of love with the idea.
